Credit Counselling: Use it Wisely

There are many institutions out there that offer credit counselling services; some are free and others charge a fee for their services.  Depending on your situation and what type of advice you are looking for, you may or may not want to use someone who is free.  While free is almost always good, sometimes you get what you pay for.

Always make sure the credit counselling service that you are using is approved by the Better Business Bureau and do some research on testimonials from past clients as well as their success rates.  You want to be dealing with companies that are reputable and have your best interests at heart.  There are also companies that may charge because they provide specialized advice on debt or credit and you want to make sure that advice is worth paying for.  A word of caution though; the internet has become a powerful research tool in this area.  It has also become a feeding ground for negative smear campaigns by people who expend a lot of energy out of saying bad things about other people.  Bottom line: always verify your sources are legitimate and reliable.

What else should you know about credit counselling?  You may want to check to see if they are an accredited organization under your country’s Standards Councils and who they are affiliated with.  Many industries out there are unregulated and don’t have a governing body to watch over them to ensure best practices.  In Canada the organization is called Credit Counselling Canada.  Check if there is a governing body in your country and if the organization you’re looking at is accredited with them.  Also, don’t be afraid to look into some of the standards that are enforced by the governing body and measure them against your own.

At the end of the day, credit counselling is always a good idea if you are in debt and need help managing your bills and making a plan to get out of debt.  Just make sure that you do your homework on the organization that you plan to work with before you enter into any contracts!

Testimonial: “Passion for Helping God’s People”

Gary and Belinda of Trinity Stewardship have no small passion for helping God’s people understand the wealth they have in God and, in turn, how to honour that relationship by being good stewards of the wealth that God allows His people to have. With anecdotal stories and years of experience in the business of financial advising Belinda and Gary are able to help participants gain an understanding of where they’re at financially; where they need to be in order to be good stewards; as importantly, how to get there; and most importantly, how to manage their resources in a way that honours God and grows the participant’s heart in the areas that matter to God.

Testimonial: “Very positive reviews from participants. Highest recommendations!”

To the issue of financial, biblical stewardship, Gary and Belinda breathe a fresh and needed approach. They have presented at my church marriage course, the local Calgary Deanery clergy, and National Federation of Presbyteral Councils clergy for Western Canada. No one yawned. Their personal conviction and experience speaks volumes. Very positive reviews from participants. Highest recommendations!

Testimonial: “What a refreshing look at stewardship…”

I have been a pastor for many years and one of the most difficult concepts to teach has been around biblical stewardship. I can tell you that speaking to Gary has been a refreshing look at how God views money–not only because of what Gary knows, but how Gary has been living it. I have been able to preview Gary’s materials and I highly recommend the Financial Pain 2 Financial Gain course.
